There seems to be some confusion between these two words and how to use them correctly. Let’s take a look.
No
- No answers a yes/no question.
“Are you going to the movies tonight?”
“No, I have to do my homework.”
- No precedes a noun that has no article.
He has no money to go on vacation.
- No can be used before a noun that is preceded by an adjective, but it is not used before any, much, many, or enough.
We have no green apples today.
Not
- Not precedes a noun that has an article.
Thursday is not the best day of the week, Friday is.
- Not precedes any, much, many, or enough.
Not many people are interested in watching that film.
There is not enough coffee left to make another pot.
- Not makes a verb negative.
I do not want to do my homework. I want to go to the movies.
Does that help? Can you write an example in the comments?
