This word, rooted in Latin, is used in Spanish to talk about setting something, making it stick or permanent, and that definition is also used in English.  However, we also use “fix” to mean “repair”, both as a noun and a verb.

I need to take the car to garage to get it fixed.

It’s also used to describe a difficult situation, or illegally determine the results of an election:

Well, I can’t find a way out–we’re in a real fix. (In this sentence fix = difficult situation)

When one party won 97% of the vote, many claimed that the results had been fixed. (In this sentence fixed = illegally arranged)
