Idioms: Lay the groundwork and Sow the seeds

We use either of these expressions to express the idea that we are preparing something that will be the base of what is to come later.
Lay the groundwork comes from construction, when a foundation must be laid before a building can be built.
Sowing the seeds comes from agriculture, referring to when the seeds are placed in the ground so they can grow and then be harvested later.
The enemy spy worked hard to sow the seeds of discontent among the soldiers; thanks to his tireless work, the army’s unity was lost and they had to give up the campaign.
Before asking for a raise, lay the groundwork by having your boss see you working hard, and casually mentioning how good you are for the company at every opportunity.
So lay the groundwork for perfecting your English by remembering these two phrases!
