There was a knock at the door. Theresa looked at me and announced, “That (1) may / might / must be George. He called earlier and said he (2) ‘d / ‘ll / ‘s drop by about this time”. I looked at how I was dressed: singlet, boxers with little hearts on them, and an open robe, and told her, “You (3) could / might / would have warned me! I look horrible!”
“Just tie up your robe—you (4) may / ‘d / ‘ll be fine!” she replied, unaffected by my embarrassment at uncombed hair and three-day beard. So, I tied up my robe and tried to straighten my hair as I went to open the door. George was on the front porch, in an impeccable three-piece suit and tie. He looked me up and down and joked, “You didn’t get all dressed up for me, did you?” I smiled back, saying “You know I (5) could / might / would never let you down by looking anything less than my best!”
